The Trump administration has approved the first ever U.S. commercial sale of lethal defensive weapons to Ukraine.

U.S. President Donald Trump administration on Wednesday, December 20, approved the sale of Model M107A1 Sniper Systems and associated equipment to the tune of $41.5 million to Ukraine, The Washington Post news website reported.

State Department notified Congress on December 13 that it had approved an export license, which allows Ukraine to buy certain light weapons and small arms from US manufacturers.

A commercial license authorizes the export of Model M107A1 Sniper Systems, ammunition, and associated parts and accessories to Ukraine, a sale valued at $41.5 million.

There has been no approval to export heavier weapons Kyiv is asking for, such as Javelin antitank missiles, the newspaper wrote.

"Under the previous two administrations, the U.S. government has approved export licenses to Ukraine, so this is nothing new", the U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on Wednesday, according to Reuters.
