President of the U.S. Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and initiated the process of relocating the U.S. embassy to the city from Tel Aviv.

President Trump said Wednesday he is formally recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and is ordering the State Department to begin moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” the president said during a speech in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House.

“I am also directing the State Department to begin preparation to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem”, - American leader noted.

Trump added, “Jerusalem is not just the heart of three great religions, but it is now also the heart of one of the most successful democracies in the world.”

"My announcement today marks the beginning of a new approach to conflict between Israel and the Palestinians," Trump said from the White House

In addition Trump stressed that this decision is not intended in any way to reflect a departure from U.S. strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace agreement.

The move fulfills a campaign promise made to religious conservatives. Trump said Vice Pres. Mike Pence would travel to Middle East region "in the coming days". But such shift in foreign policy on Jerusalem could also inflame tensions across the region.

Prime Minister of Israel Netanyahu thanked Trump for 'just and courageous' decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and named Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as capital a `historic day,' that is `important step toward peace'. He also has urged other countries to follow the U.S. by moving their embassies in Israel to Jerusalem

Hamas reacted on Trump's decision by giving a gloomy prediction that Jerusalem recognition will open "gates of hell". Palestinian president called Trump announcement on Jerusalem is `declaration of withdrawal' from peace process.
