The holiday is marked annually on December 6.

On December 6, fighters of the Ukrainian army celebrate the Armed Forces Day.

Leaders of the state and common citizens pay tribute to the Armed Forces, expressing their gratitude for fortitude and valor on the frontline, as the army opposes the Russian aggression in Donbas – and honoring the memory of the fallen warriors.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak congratulated the servicemen on the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in his video message on the occasion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Day.

"I am proud of Ukrainian Armed Forces which members showed courage, expertise and skill at a time difficult for the country and themselves, gathered in a strong fist in order to give a fitting rebuff to the aggressor who crossed our borders and backstabbed us.

“We have much to be proud of today! We have built an army capable of defending our country!" Poltorak said.

The minister also thanked all the servicemen for their dedication and expertise, for their hard work and sacrifice.

"Happy Armed Forces of Ukraine Day!" Poltorak said.

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov in his congratulation reminded about severe conditions, in which army has been forming, and the transformation process it is passing through now.

“It was 100 years ago, in 1917, when the Armed Forces of the Ukrainian People's Republic were created but the discord in the country, the absence of a single military hierarchy, the lack of understanding of the importance to protect the country led to the loss of our independence and our army for many years. Today we must draw conclusions from the history of our country,” he said.

“Being a military is a calling. Patriotism, professionalism, invincibility, and courage of our warriors, their loyalty to duty became the pledge of victory. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are ready to repel any provocation, Ukraine's combat experience is already being studied in the armies of NATO member states!” Turchynov added.

The holiday was established by the 1993 parliamentary decree; December 6 is actually the day when the Parliament voted and approved the law ‘On the Armed Forces of Ukraine.’.
