President Petro Poroshenko emphasizes that the new law on education fully meets the European practices and he, as President, will always observe the rights of all citizens of Ukraine, including the rights of national minorities, to the free use of their mother tongue.

“Signing the laws supporting our Ukrainian language I will ensure that there remains a wide space for the free use of other languages,” Petro Poroshenko said in the meeting with the educational workers commenting on article 7 of the law on education that came into effect today.

“Ukraine demonstrated and will demonstrate this attitude to the rights of national minorities, which fully meets our international obligations and the European standards," he said.

The Head of State stressed the importance of explaining the position of Ukraine in the linguistic issue to our European colleagues. “We should make a lot of efforts to explain our position to our European partners, first of all neighbors. To prove them and all the European institutions that the linguistic article of the educational law of Ukraine fully meets the European practices. And it is very important to hear one another in this discussion,” Petro Poroshenko said.

“The new law on education must bring us closer to Europe instead of moving away,” the President noted praising the address of the Ministry of Education to the Council of Europe and the Venice Commission. He also requested Minister of Education Liliya Hrynevych to defend our vision of mandatory guarantees of the rights of national minorities.

The Head of State assured that the “results of expertise and this discussion with our European partners can be taken into account in the new edition of the law on secondary education”.

At the same time, the President emphasizes that Ukraine makes a decision alone in such issues.
