President: The purpose of the UN peacekeeping operation is not to freeze conflict, but to bring peace and Ukrainian sovereignty to the occupied territory

In the course of the briefing for journalists in New York, President Petro Poroshenko emphasized that Ukraine has presented its vision of the UN peacekeeping operation in Donbas.

The Head of State reminded that Ukraine has been contributing to the UN peacekeeping endeavor for many years and in April 2015, it requested the deployment of the UN peacekeeping mission in its occupied territory.

“Today, the approval of the need for a peacekeeping operation in Ukraine grows sharply. And we pay great attention to the details, as “devil is in the details”. Ukraine insists that a peacekeeping operation with the UN Security Council mandate must be held throughout the territory in the east of my country occupied by Russia,” the President said. Besides, the UN peacekeeping mission must have access to the uncontrolled area of the Ukraine-Russia border in order to stop the supply of Russian weapons and military personnel.

“The purpose of the peacekeeping operation is to bring peace and Ukrainian sovereignty to the occupied territory, not to freeze the occupation and the conflict. This is a position of not Ukraine, but of the majority of the UN Security Council members,” the Head of State said.
