Poroshenko says Ukraine ready to repulse aggressor

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says Ukraine is ready to repulse the aggressor severely in case of its attempts to launch an offensive against the country, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

"I am confident in our army, which is now at its best. This is, by the way, an assessment of European think tanks. However, there is still much work to be done to strengthen and modernize it, and to get it fully compatible with NATO standards," Poroshenko said at the military parade in Kyiv on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of Ukraine's Independence Day, August 24.

According to the president, Ukraine seeks and finds asymmetric and effective solutions in order to restrain the Russian army (the largest in Europe and the world's third) in the long historical perspective.

"Ukraine is ready to repulse the aggressor severely in case of its attempts to launch an offensive. Nevertheless, we proceed from the priority of the peaceful, diplomatic, political and legal way of returning Donbas and Crimea," Poroshenko stressed.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the president together with his wife Maryna Poroshenko and children prayed for Ukraine in Kyiv's St. Sophia Cathedral.
