President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko noted that the 19th Ukraine – EU Summit was symbolic, as it became the Summit of the visa-free regime and association. This has come true due to the resolute and efficient cooperation between Ukraine and the EU, as well as the powerful support of the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, the European Commissioners and the member-states.

The Head of State reminded that over the past few days U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had visited Ukraine.

“Kyiv becomes a truly important center on the diplomatic map of the world. And it is very symbolic that the highlight of this diplomatic marathon is the historic Ukraine-EU Summit. This is a moment that summarizes Ukraine's many years of efforts on the European integration path,” President Petro Poroshenko noted in the joint briefing following the 19thUkraine – EU Summit.

The President emphasizes that this historic moment makes the return of Ukraine to the European family irreversible. “With the removal of visa curtain, we have started to ruin the borders between our nations that share common values,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The Head of State emphasized that the path of Ukraine to the conclusion of the Association Agreement had lasted 3779 days. “We must make every effort for the European integration to stop being an abstract notion and become clear for our citizens,” he noted.

The President added: “It is important to outline new strategic prospects we will strive for. It is about the interdependence between the progress in Ukraine's reforms and Ukraine's rapprochement with the EU”.

“Ukraine has intentions to join the Customs Union with the EU, integrate into the Schengen Area, become part of the Digital Market or the Energy Union – this is a powerful stimulus for the implementation of economic and social, sectoral reforms, increase of our common trade and investments,” the Head of State emphasized. The President believes that it is important to evaluate Ukrainian intentions not from today, but from the prospect of the future when Ukraine will be ready to become part of those ambitious projects.

“That is why it is important to start the elaboration of “roadmaps” for the achievement of our dreams today,” Petro Poroshenko said. He reminded that many people considered the Association Agreement and the visa-free regime as dreams 10 years ago. “Even a year ago, a lot of politicians did not believe in possibility of ratification of the Association Agreement and introduction of the visa-free regime. And only our enthusiasm, enthusiasm of optimists has made it possible with the assistance of our friends and partners,” the President noted.

President of the European Council Donald Tusk reminded that the EU Council had approved the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU that would enter into force on September 1. According to him, the volume of trade between Ukraine and the EU had increased by 25%. “Full ratification of the Agreement will let us increase cooperation and deepen political association and integration of Ukraine with the EU. The key sentence of the Association Agreement for me is the following: “The EU confirms the European aspirations of Ukraine and welcomes this European choice,” he said.

Donald Tusk also praised the introduction of the visa-free regime with Ukraine.

“Today, the EU clearly states that it stands by Ukraine against Russian aggression and supports it in the protection of its independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty. We do not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea. We urge all the parties to fully implement the Minsk agreements and underline Russia’s responsibility in this issue,” the President of the European Council noted reminding that the EU had decided to prolong economic sanctions against Russia.
