President Petro Poroshenko considers the verdict of the Stockholm arbitration tribunal as regards the dispute of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine against Gazprom on the gas supply contract victorious. It allowed restoring justice and protecting Ukraine’s interests in energy sphere.

“Our common efforts – NJSC team, legal representatives, MFA team who also helped a lot, position of the Presidential Administration and the Government – yielded this result. My congratulations to you and to the entire Ukrainian people. Finally, we have secured state interests, at least in an extremely important energy sphere,” the Head of State said in the meeting with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for the European Integration Olena Zerkal and Chairman of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Andriy Kobolyev.

“I can state that it is our convincing victory in the protection of Ukraine’s interests,” he added.

According to Petro Poroshenko, it has become possible because the Ukrainian team has stuck to the position of convincing reasoning in the Stockholm arbitration tribunal from the very first day.

“First of all it is an unfair “take or pay” principle,” the President said adding that the given item in the Ukrainian contract contradicted with the principles enshrined in the European contracts.

“Second, gas should no longer be a tool of political pressure on Ukraine and a source of corrupt schemes for the representatives of former Ukrainian authorities. The gas price is finally formed by market principles and it is also our absolute achievement,” the Head of State noted.

Chairman of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Andriy Kobolyev thanked the President for his support. He emphasized the importance of completing the case on the gas supply under final settlement. He believes the given process will take about three months. In addition, the Chairman of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine stressed the importance of the arbitration decision to abolish the demand of Gazprom to compensate for more than 40 billion dollars.

Andriy Kobolyev informed that NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine is planning to finish the transit case this year. “We hope we will manage to prove our case and it will help us finally put an end to the issue of transparent, fair and market relations between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom,” he concluded.

Olena Zerkal praised the work of the team of lawyers and the team of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine in this issue.
