President Petro Poroshenko is confident that the Ukrainian authorities must have ensured the status of autonomy of Crimean Tatars long ago. He confirmed willingness to submit a series of constitutional amendments as regards the given issue for consideration by the Ukrainian Parliament.

“I think it was a mistake that in 23 years before the Russian annexation of Crimea, the Ukrainian government has failed to ensure respective status of autonomy of Crimean Tatars,” the President said.

“The Constitutional Commission that, inter alia, contains representatives of the Mejlis must offer a format of this autonomy,” Petro Poroshenko said.

He noted that as soon as the working group of the Constitutional Commission finishes its work over the given issue, the public will be informed on the format of the autonomy. The President is hopeful that this work will be completed shortly.

“Delay is inappropriate and it is not because of the President,” Petro Poroshenko said. He reminded that to approve the amendments to the Constitution, 300 votes of people’s deputies are required. “We all have to work on that,” the President stressed.
