President: Unity of Ukraine must be paramount
President, Unity, Ukraine, Must, Paramount

At the ceremony of presenting Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, President Petro Poroshenko congratulated Ukrainians on the 203rd anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s anniversary. “This is a person that unites Ukrainians and forms Ukraine,” the Head of State noted.

According to Petro Poroshenko, our culture has always united Ukrainians: “It unites us now as well. Its traditional layers and modern trends are a strong foundation of Ukrainian identity, cultural distinctiveness and political sovereign Ukrainian nation”.

“Numerous generations of Ukrainians call Shevchenko a father of Ukrainian nation. His power and greatness is not only in his poetry. He returned historic memory to Ukrainians, awakened national consciousness, forced to recall dignity, inspired to fight,” the President stressed.

“Speaking with the words of Taras, our generation “had to drink Moscow’s poison from Moscow’s cup”. We are now facing the most dramatic period of modern history. But now we have a clear understanding of “our broad path”. We have a brave Ukrainian army, Ukrainian church, Ukrainian language. We have the state itself and modern Ukrainian political nation. The whole world supports us in consolidation of independence and sovereignty,” the President emphasized.

“The great will of Taras raised national liberation wave of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1920. This year, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of its beginning and must learn its main lesson - unity is paramount,” Petro Poroshenko noted.

According to the President, “The will of Taras inspires our warriors to defend every piece of Ukrainian land from Russian aggression”.

The Head of State noted that before Russian occupation of Simferopol and Donetsk, prudential Ukrainians came together near monuments to Taras Shevchenko and pro-Moscow hirelings and agents came together near monuments to Lenin. He is confident that there are still brave patriots who will come to the monument to Kobzar in the occupied territories today.

“Shevchenko’s word is the backbone and inspiration for our European and civil progress,” Petro Poroshenko said.

Before the beginning of the ceremony, the President and his wife honored memory of Kobzar. The presidential couple laid flowers to the monument to Taras Shevchenko in Kyiv.

The ceremony was also attended by Chairman of the Parliament Andriy Parubiy, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, members of the Cabinet of Ministers, people’s deputies, cultural figures and public representatives.
