Ukraine and Portugal to enhance cooperation in defence industry

In the framework of the first visit to Portugal since the independence of Ukraine, Minister of Defence of Ukraine General of the Army of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak held talks with Minister of National Defence of Portugal Mr José Alberto Azeredo Lopes.

General Poltorak thanked his counterpart for invitation and said both countries had rather close relations and the Ukrainians constituted the second-largest foreign community of Portugal.

“Portugal supports Ukraine in striving to maintain its territorial integrity and does not recognize the annexation of Crimea”, Mr Lopes said, “Simultaneously, we understand the only possible way forward towards ending the situation in Donbas is to engage in peaceful and diplomatic dialog”.

The parties focused their discussion on development of a Memorandum on Defence and Technical Cooperation as annex to the current Agreement on Cooperation in military sphere between Ukraine and Portugal.

This document will enhance cooperation in defence technical sphere, particularly, in the context of manufacture of dual-use items.

Minister of National Defence of Portugal Mr José Alberto Azeredo Lopes announced this decision during a bilateral meeting with Minister of Defence of Ukraine General of the Army of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak.

He spoke about readiness of Portugal to provide €200 million as material assistance to the Ukrainian army to buy non-lethal armament and equipment.

Also were discussed possibilities and ways of joint scientific activities at higher military educational establishments.

The counterparts focused on discussion of cooperation in military medicine and rehabilitation of the Ukrainian servicemen wounded in the east of Ukraine. The heads of defence ministries agreed on experience sharing among military doctors. According to the agreement, the Ukrainian WIA soldiers will undergo treatment and rehabilitation in Portugal as well.
