The Security Service of Ukraine, Prosecutor General’s Office and National Police solved a flagrant crime of the Russian secret services – kidnapping of a blogger, former FSB officer Illia Bohdanov. It was announced by the Head of the SBU Vasyl Hrytsak at the joint briefing with the Prosecutor General Yurii Lutsenko. “Thanks to operative tactics Ukrainian law enforcers recorded disgraceful tools used by the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and FSB, that ordered, organized and financed kidnapping of a Ukrainian national in the Ukrainian territory”, he stated.

The SBU received information about plans to take previously kidnapped blogger Bohdanov across the Ukrainian-Russian border. At the border with Russia the SBU officers together with the Alpha task force apprehended two criminals, who were Ukrainian nationals, during their attempt to transport Illia Bohdanov to the Russian Federation.

The SBU revealed the whole chain of the criminal scheme: The accomplices of the kidnapping, who had to transport Bohdanov across the border, are both Ukrainian citizens. The masterminds of the kidnapping were the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and the FSB. The organizer of the kidnapping is a businessman; a former deputy of Kharkiv Regional Council, recruited 2 years ago.

“The SBU gathered all the necessary evidence of preparing and committing the kidnapping including transcripts of all participants of the crime from contractors to executors”, Vasyl Hrytsak mentioned. He also added that the law enforcers have transfer orders that prove the transmission of money from Russia. It is the payment to the organizer for the kidnapping.

Vasyl Hrytsak reminded that it was not the first attempt on the life of Illia Bohdanov. Last February, the SBU officers detained an assassin who had been tasked with shooting Bohdanov with a sniper rifle. Last October, the killer, recruited by the Russian Federal Security Service and now-deceased terrorist Zhylin, was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison.

The SBU Head addressed Russian secret services: “Your “professional” actions not only violate civilized modus operandi of the intelligence community, but also are qualified as organization of killing – a crime with no statutes of limitation in international law.”

Attempted kidnapping and killing of Illia Bohdanov took place before presentation of his work on practices of Russian secret services
