Today Stockholm hosted an official welcome ceremony of Minister of Defence of Ukraine General of the Army of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak. Karlberg Palace (Military Academy Karlberg) where the Military Higher Educational Establishment is located became the venue for this event during which the Swedish Armed Forces Orchestra performed the anthem of Ukraine and the Kingdom of Sweden.
During the visit General Poltorak will hold bilateral talks with Minister of Defence of Sweden Peter Mr Peter Hultqvist.
Gen. Stepan Poltorak briefed his counterpart on military political situation in Ukraine in the context of Russian military aggression.
“A key factor challenging the formation of security situation in the European continent and in the world is efforts of the Russian Federation to change the existing balance of forces and destroy the current architecture of the European security and regain control over post-Soviet countries. Despite the aggravation of the situation, Ukraine follows a policy of peaceful settlement of the conflict in the east of Ukraine. We observe the Minsk agreements, try to resolve the conflict by political and peaceful means,” Ukraine’s Defence Minister stressed.
Mr Peter Hultqvist emphasized his comprehensive support for Ukrainian European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, primarily in the area of reform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in order to achieve full interoperability with the armed forces of Western partners.
The Swedish Minister spoke about security situation in the Baltic region and shared experience of bilateral and multilateral cooperation of his country at international level.
“In this context the armed forces of Sweden focus on increase of interoperability level, information exchange at international level, joint exercises. We learn to respond to crisis situations,” Mr Peter Hultqvist said.
In the context of development of military political partnership the Ukraine’s Minister stressed the importance of the results of the Warsaw Summit especially in terms of NATO Comprehensive Assistance Package.
General Poltorak also underlined the program of reforms of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and program of reforms of armed forces of Sweden had the same timeframes — 2016-2020. Ministers of Defence of Ukraine and Sweden agree to deepen defence cooperation and stressed consolidation of peacekeeping and security efforts in Ukraine and elsewhere.
“The senior officials also discussed the current state and the prospects of further development of Ukrainian — Swedish defence cooperation.
The Ukrainian minister proposed to deepen practical cooperation between General Staffs of both countries for efficient realization of defence reform till 2020, as well as concerning sharing experience in territorial defence activities.
“We’re also interested in cooperation in military medicine and provision of advisory assistance in training of the Ukrainian servicemen in tactical medicine, resuming cooperation in ecological security, cooperation of engineer troops’ representatives,” he said and added Ukraine was ready to share its experience gained during the ongoing conflict.
“We have stressed our firm position on the need to ensure the territorial integrity of Ukraine and stated that the occupation of the part of the Ukrainian territory is the biggest challenge to the security of Europe and requires the solidarity of the international community.
We have confirmed the adherence of Sweden and Ukraine to fundamental principles of international law, respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders.
