President urged Ukrainian community of USA to continue supporting Ukraine in its struggle against aggressor
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko met with representatives of the Ukrainian community of the United States in the Ukrainian institute of America in New York. The Head of State called it symbolic that he started his visit to the United States with conversation with foreign Ukrainians of America for the second time, according to Dialog.ua.
The President noted that the meeting was attended by the Crimean Tatars’ representatives. According to him, Chairman of the Mejlis Refat Chubarov informed that Crimean Tatars hadn’t participated in today’s elections in Crimea.
Petro Poroshenko congratulated the attendees on the 25th anniversary of restoration of the Ukrainian independence and noted that the given event had been overshadowed by the 'black cloud of war' for the third year in a row.
The President emphasized that we had managed to revive the Ukrainian Armed Forces jointly, inter alia, with the assistance of Ukrainians from the United States. 'I am proud to lead such a great nation as Ukrainians. I have once again understood that on August 24 - we passed by Khreshchatyk right after the parade and I saw tears of happiness of the united Ukraine, tears of pride for the country,' the Head of State told.
'Thank you for your care, unity and love to Ukraine,' the President said.
The Head of State stressed that it was very important to continue sanctions against Russia. 'Human rights violations in the occupied territories, inter alia, against the Crimean Tatars requires the introduction of additional sectoral sanctions. The world must respond to that. For example, modernized analogue of the Jackson-Vanik amendment could bring a good result for us,' the Head of State said calling for the development of the plan of actions jointly and working in that direction.
Another important issue is to get lethal weapons and other military assistance, as stated by the President. 'In 2.5 years, we have proved that we can be relied on and trusted. We have demonstrated that Ukraine would never wage a war of conquest. Ukraine has never posed a threat. It is absolutely safe to provide us with lethal weaponry. We will fight for our land until the last drop of blood,' he emphasized.
Petro Poroshenko informed the attendees on the course of reforms in Ukraine and elimination of corruption.
The President expressed special gratitude to President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America Tamara Gallo Olexy for her work. In her turn, Ms. Tamara assured: 'The Ukrainian community of the United States will keep on doing everything possible to enhance bilateral and strategic partnership between our states. We are committed to continue manifestation in defense of Ukraine, encourage the U.S. to support and strengthen economic sanctions against Russia until it fully complies with its international obligations, call for the U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, which it needs, continue to provide humanitarian aid to volunteer soldiers and raise awareness about the ongoing war in Ukraine'. She noted that Ukraine had managed to prove its readiness to democracy, European values and independent future with its words, actions and blood of its people.
The Head of State presented decoration of the President of Ukraine - jubilee medal '25 years of independence Ukraine' to President of the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee Larissa Kyj and Director of the Ukrainian Museum in New York Maria Shust for their contribution to the strengthening of Ukraine’s international authority, promotion of its historical heritage and modern achievements.
