Monument to militants blown up in Luhansk

Unidentified individuals blew up the monument to the so-called 'militant defenders' in the separatist-held city of Luhansk (self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic), eastern Ukraine, Ukraine Today reports.

'The sculpture personifying militant-Cossack was insignificantly damaged, following the explosion,' the statement reads.

Law enforcement authorities of the Luhansk People's Republic arrived at a scene. Investigation is under way.

The monument was unveiled on May 12 in front of the building of the Security Service, which was captured by Russian-backed militants in April 2014. This led to setting up the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.

Militant leader Igor Plotnitsky attended the unveiling ceremony.

The monument comprises three sculptures of militants depicting Alexey Mozgovoy, commander of Luhansk 'Ghost Battalion', Russian Cossack Alexander Mazhayev, aka Babay, who took part in Crimea's annexation and Slovyansk seizure, and Alexey Milchakov, neo-Nazi from St. Petersburg, who participated in the murder of civilians in the village of Metalist, the Luhansk region.

A woman holding a child in her arms stands out in the foreground of the memorial.
