The number of fatalities in central Italy grew to 267. About four hundred more were wounded, Reuters say with reference to the local civil protection department, reports.

The worst affected towns - Amatrice, Arquata, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto - are usually sparsely populated but have been swelled by tourists visiting for summer, making estimates for the precise number missing difficult.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has pledged EUR 50 million (GBP 42 million) in funds for rebuilding.

About 900 underground aftershocks were reported since the earthquake took place; 57 of them after midnight of August 26.
