Moreover, they are against providing the region with any special status.
The deputies of Kyiv City Council made an important decision during their plenary session. They are going to apply to the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and the Verkhovna Rada in relation to prevention of holding elections in the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
77 of 97 deputies voted for this decision.
'No elections, including the elections to the local government can be held in the territory, which is now under the occupation. Taking under consideration the circumstances due to which part of Ukrainians were forced to leave Donetsk and Luhansk regions because of the occupation, there is no doubt that the elections will be won only by representatives of the so-called DPR and LPR terrorist organizations. The elections in the Donbass mean full and complete recognition of the fact there is an internal conflict in Ukraine, not Russian aggression,' the council’s deputy Serhiy Husovskiy said.
The appeal also states that Kyiv City Council’s deputies are categorically against provision of any special status or any other preferences to certain regions as Ukraine is a unitary state.
Earlier, Petro Poroshenko reported that they had already arranged a concept for holding local elections in some areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The head of the state noted that the elections in the Donbass are possible after the introduction of security measures and the OSCE police mission. Furthermore, Kyiv should get back the control of the borders.
