Sahra Wagenknecht from Germany's far-left Linke party was hit in the face with a chocolate cake on Saturday in an attack claimed by an 'anti-fascist' group.
Sahra Wagenknecht has advocated putting a limit on the number of refugees Germany should accept.
Wagenknecht was sitting in the front row during the opening speech at a party congress when a young man stopped in front of her and threw the chocolate cake in her face, before shouting what sounded like slogans.
The activist says the action was prompted by the politician’s anti-refugee stance.
Germany has taken on a major role advocating for refugees from Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans. While other members of the European Union have pushed back against asylum seekers, Germany took in over a million refugees last year.
The cake attack was reinforced by other protesters throwing leaflets all over the place. A security detail took them away, while Wagenknecht was quickly surrounded by fellow party members, who covered her with their jackets in front of the cameras and escorted the MP out of the hall.
