Israel can't forget: Remembrance Day marks with a minute of silence

Mourning events take place in all the country on this day.

At 10:00 on the Day of Catastrophe and Heroism of European Jewry a mourning siren sounded in all the country in memory of the six million Jews killed by the Nazis during the Second World War, and in heroism of those who started a rebellion in the Warsaw Ghetto.

Enterprises, public and private transport stop during the siren’s sounding. The siren cannot be heard in trains, so at 10:00 the drivers stop them and all the passengers stand up. People stop in respectful and mournful silence wherever they are at the moment.

The Minute of memory was followed by a ceremony of commemoration of the Holocaust victims in Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem and the laying of wreaths at the memorial dedicated to the rebellion in the Warsaw Ghetto, which was a symbol of Jewish resistance.

National Day of Catastrophe and Heroism of European Jewry starts with the sunset and finishes the next day with appearance of stars. This day is celebrated on the 27th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan every year. This time it is celebrated on May 5, 2016.
