The United Arab Emirates city already has the world’s tallest building — the Burj Khalifa, which stands at more than 828 metres...But plans for an even taller structure to surpass it have been announcedA real estate company Emaar Properties finished Burj Khalifa in 2010. It’s considered to be the highest building in the world.

However, the tower can lose its status as the highest building in the nearest future, as a rival Saudi company is now building a skyscraper in the city of Jeddah.

It is expected that Kingdom Tower (or Burj Al-Mamlaka), formerly known as Mile-High Tower, will stand at one kilometer and set a new record among the highest buildings in the world, leaving Burj Khalifa in Dubai behind.

Emaar Properties’ representative hasn’t said how high the new building will be. He only mentioned that it will be a bit higher than Burj Khalifa.

A prominent Spanish architect and sculptor Santiago Calatrava Valls will be the project’s designer.

The tower, attached by cables, will have restaurants, hotels and an observation deck.

The project costs about $1 billion. The new skyscraper is planned to be finished by 2020 when the country will host Dubai World Expo.

Furthermore, they are going to finish another tower in Jeddah by 2020.
