Jabhat an-Nusra fighter Abu Saqqar, who had become notorious for eating a governmental soldier’s heart, was killed in Syria, The Daily Mail reports.
Abu Saqqar’s convoy got into an ambush and was shot dead in Latakia province. It is not known who exactly destroyed the Islamist group. This could be either governmental troops or militants of a rival group.
Abu Saqqar took part in Syrian Civil War as a member of the Farouq Brigades of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) that used to fight in Homs. He created his own group under the name Independent Brigade of Omar al-Farouq and claimed himself a moderate oppositionist. In 2013, Saqqar became notorious after he had cut a killed governmental soldier’s heart and liver and ate them in front of the camera, saying "I swear to Allah, we will eat your hearts and your livers, you soldiers of Bashar the dog."
The video caused outrage both in Syria and in the West, including armed opposition that dubbed Abu Saqqar "cannibal rebel." The FSA leadership got under public pressure and promised to take Saqqar to court, but he decided not to wait for the trial and joined the Islamists with his brigade.
Now Latakia province is watching heavy fights. Jabhat an-Nusra and Ahrar ash-Sham have launched an offensive against the government troops, using the fact that the main forces of the Syrian army are engaged in operations against the Islamic State (all the groups mentioned above are banned in Russia). Despite the fact that the groups are considered to be allies, some regular clashes still happen among the militants.
